Zelensky Comments on US-Russia Economic Agreements

Zelensky discusses potential US-Russia energy agreements

In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the nature of potential economic agreements between the United States and Russia, expressing uncertainty about the specifics of the discussions involving U.S. negotiators and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Zelensky stated, “It is clear what economic agreements with the Russians may be. Certainly, the majority are energy-related. I don’t think I can discuss this in detail publicly. However, it is critical for us to maintain our primary position – Ukraine must fight against any additional opportunities for Russia to finance this war. I think that’s fair.”

Contextualizing his remarks, Zelensky pointed out that on August 31, during the G20 summit, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent met with Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov. Reports indicate that Siluanov attempted to explore potential areas of economic cooperation, but Bessent interrupted, asserting that there would be no leniency for Russia as long as the war against Ukraine continues.
