Putin Announces Creation of Non-Negotiable Security Zone in Ukraine

President Vladimir Putin announced on Friday that Russia is establishing a non-negotiable “security zone” within Ukraine, along its border, as reported by Reuters. During a military uniform-clad visit to a command post, Putin stated that this initiative responds to Ukraine’s incursions into the Kursk region in 2024-2025.
He remarked, “The armed forces of Russia have been tasked not only with driving the enemy off our land but also with creating a security zone on adjacent territory. This task is being successfully accomplished,” during televised comments.
Putin emphasized, “Our goal is to ensure absolute security for Russia’s border regions in the future, and we do not intend to make this a subject for potential peace negotiations with Ukraine.” According to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitri Peskov, the planned security zone extends 660 kilometers, with 70% currently under Russian control.
