Ukraine Launches Drone Attack on Russian Refinery Following Zelensky’s Statement

Ukraine has carried out a significant drone strike targeting a refinery in Russia’s Ryazan region, resulting in a fire, as confirmed by the regional governor on Thursday morning, according to reports from Reuters.

This marks the first Ukrainian attack on a Russian energy facility since U.S. President Donald Trump announced a truce regarding energy operations between Russia and Ukraine on Sunday.

Despite this truce, Russia has continued to strike Ukrainian energy infrastructure. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitri Peskov indicated that no specific agreements had been established, allowing for continued operations in this sector.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated in an interview with the Financial Times, published Thursday, that Ukraine had paused attacks on energy infrastructure for three days in compliance with U.S. wishes but is resuming them due to ongoing Russian strikes on its own energy facilities.

Governor Pavel Malkov of the Ryazan region reported that damage assessments are currently underway and emergency services are responding to the scene. He also noted that a storage facility in a nearby area was damaged during the attacks but did not provide further details.

The refinery, owned by Russian oil giant Rosneft, supplies fuel to Moscow and has been targeted multiple times by drone strikes in recent months. It accounts for nearly 5% of Russia’s total oil refining capacity.

Malkov announced that school and kindergarten classes in two districts have been canceled due to what he described as “massive drone attacks.”
