Kremlin Signals Potential Economic Cooperation with US Through Diesel Agreement

The recent agreement between Russia and the United States regarding diesel fuel deliveries could pave the way for enhanced economic cooperation between the two nations, Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev stated on Wednesday. He noted that Moscow is prepared to overcome any sanctions-related challenges to ensure the fuel supply, as reported by Reuters.
Last Friday, US President Donald Trump announced that he and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, had reached a deal for Russia to supply diesel to the US and global markets.
Trump aims to lower diesel prices in the US ahead of the midterm elections scheduled for November 3.
This agreement required Trump to lift some sanctions he had previously imposed on Russia, a move that has attracted significant criticism from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European officials.
Dmitriev expressed that this deal could serve as a template for future agreements, emphasizing Russia’s intent to maintain its economic engagement with the US. “This is not just about the diesel agreement; there are many other opportunities for economic cooperation and investment with the US that benefit both Russia and the United States, as well as global markets,” Dmitriev told reporters.
The Kremlin has repeatedly asserted its belief in the potential for profitable cooperation with the United States across various economic sectors, including energy and mineral resources. They have expressed regret that Washington had previously tied such agreements to the cessation of the war in Ukraine.
Dmitriev also mentioned that Russia plans to continue collaborating with the US on economic and investment projects, stating that they would keep demonstrating, through concrete examples, that American sanctions primarily impact the American people and farmers.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni weighed in on Wednesday, declaring that the diesel agreement represents a “very risky choice,” countering efforts to compel Putin to engage in negotiations and reach a peace agreement with Ukraine.
