The Competition Council announced that it is analyzing the transaction through which UMB Steel SRL, a company controlled by businessman Dorinel Umbrărescu, intends to take over the assets belonging to ArcelorMittal Hunedoara SA, according to a press release sent on Monday.

The institution specified that UMB Steel SRL is part of the UMB group, which is owned by the Umbrărescu family and is active in fields such as: design and construction of roads and bridges, building construction, production of ferrous metals and concrete products for construction and electricity production.

“The assets of ArcelorMittal Hunedoara SA covered by the transaction mainly consist of production equipment and facilities, materials and stocks, as well as land and buildings related to the factory in Hunedoara county and certain real estate assets located outside of it,” the release states.

The Competition Council stated that ArcelorMittal Hunedoara SA ceased its activity in September 2025.

According to the legislation, the transaction needs authorization from the Competition Council, which explained that “it will evaluate it in order to establish compatibility with a normal competitive environment and will issue a decision within the terms provided by law”.

At the end of last year, ArcelorMittal Hunedoara signed an agreement in principle to sell its assets to UMB Steel SRL, at a total price of 12.5 million euros, to which VAT is added, according to the report of the Bucharest Stock Exchange (BVB).

ArcelorMittal Hunedoara is controlled by the international group ArcelorMittal, based in Luxembourg, the largest steel producer in the world, which owns the majority of the shares of the company listed on the BVB. It is a steel mill, producer of rolled steel.

The production activity of ArcelorMittal Hunedoara was stopped in the autumn, against the background of the lack of prospects for economic recovery and the need to limit the losses generated by the maintenance of unused assets.
