How to Start a Podcast and Monetize It: Expert Insights

Podcast creators have the potential to achieve high listener retention rates, with crime podcasts drawing in as much as 70-80% of their audience until the end of each episode. Business podcast creators can also command attractive advertising rates, even with smaller audiences. At the recent BlastCast Podcast Festival, podcast expert Marta Niemira provided insights on launching a podcast and shared common pitfalls for beginners.

Niemira highlighted that crime podcasts continue to have significant growth potential. She explained, “Crime is a universally appealing topic, and there is always a demand for intriguing narratives that keep listeners engaged.” This retention rate is vital not just for content creators, but also for advertisers, as higher audience retention increases the likelihood of ad recall.

Why Crime Podcasts Are Lucrative

The allure of real-life crime stories captivates audiences who are eager to learn about the motives behind crimes and the sequence of events. Niemira noted that podcast creators can leverage existing stories, which saves them from having to invent new ones. They simply need to conduct thorough research and narrate these tales engagingly.

Niemira emphasized that retention in crime podcasts remains among the highest, which is critical from an advertising perspective. “With 70-80% of listeners sticking around, this is significant for monetization,” she stated.

Business Podcasts: Higher Rates Despite Smaller Audiences

Another genre gaining traction is business podcasts. According to Niemira, the advertising potential for these podcasts is not solely determined by the number of listeners but also by the audience’s profile. Business podcasts are often hosted by entrepreneurs who view their shows as a means to cultivate their personal brand while engaging with their hobbies.

These podcasts tend to attract business-minded individuals, making them appealing to advertisers like banks and service providers aimed at businesses. Niemira illustrated this with an example: “A bank aiming to promote a business account will seek a podcast with a targeted audience that includes entrepreneurs.”

Moreover, while standard episodes might receive 10,000 to 15,000 listens, advertisers might value these podcasts at rates ranging from two to three times more than expected based on listener numbers due to the quality of the audience.

Three Keys to Podcasting Success

Niemira outlined three essential traits for podcast creators: passion, consistency, and hard work. Maintaining a regular publishing schedule is crucial, as success does not come overnight. “You must commit to a routine, such as recording every Monday, regardless of any obstacles,” she advised.

The Importance of Promotion

Publishing episodes on platforms like Spotify or YouTube does not guarantee visibility. Niemira pointed out that new podcasters often neglect the promotion of their shows. Effective use of thumbnails and social media can significantly increase listener engagement.

How Much Can You Earn from a Podcast?

Niemira shared insights on potential earnings for podcast creators during the festival, noting that income largely depends on listenership numbers, audience demographics, and advertising formats. For instance, podcasts with around 5,000 listens per episode might see advertising rates of approximately 2,000-3,000 PLN, but actual earnings can vary based on campaign effectiveness.

To earn around 10,000 PLN per month, a podcast creator would ideally need 15,000 to 20,000 listens per episode. Crucially, advertisers focus on recent statistics rather than total lifetime listens.

Cost of Starting a Podcast

Niemira also discussed the costs involved in launching a podcast. The expenses vary greatly depending on whether creators handle all tasks themselves or outsource them. If everything is done independently, the initial costs could be minimal, but they can rise significantly if professional equipment or studio services are utilized. Setting up a basic video recording setup might cost around 10,000 PLN, while studio services typically range from 500 to 2,000 PLN per episode.

Seven Tips for New Podcasters

For those starting in podcasting, Niemira suggested focusing on a niche area of interest, maintaining consistent episode releases, and investing time in marketing strategies to grow their audience effectively.
