Sweden Deploys Patriot Missile System in NATO Mission for First Time

Sweden is set to deploy its Patriot missile system for the first time within a NATO mission, aimed at bolstering support for Ukraine. The deployment will take place in Rzeszów, located in southeastern Poland, with operations expected to commence in early December 2026.
Alongside the Patriot system, approximately 100 Swedish soldiers from an air defense regiment, supported by the Blekinge Air Wing, will be dispatched to the area. This logistical hub in Poland plays a crucial role in delivering military and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine as part of NATO’s security assistance and training program (NSATU).
The Swedish unit will integrate into NATO’s air and missile defense frameworks and operate under Alliance command. “Supporting Ukraine remains a priority for Sweden. By deploying advanced capabilities from the air defense regiment and Blekinge Air Wing, Sweden will enhance NATO’s eastern flank in Poland while helping to protect essential support systems for Ukraine,” stated Johan Peckaari, commander of the Swedish Army.
The Swedish Armed Forces plan to sustain this mission into the first half of 2027.
Background
Recently, Poland has intensified its security measures in response to Russian attacks near its borders. Prime Minister Donald Tusk has noted that combat operations in Ukraine are increasingly encroaching upon Poland, necessitating regular air patrols by Polish military aircraft due to Russian strikes in close proximity to the border. In light of these events, air raid shelters from the Cold War era have been reactivated in Lublin, and Polish authorities are evaluating existing shelters and dual-purpose structures for civilian protection.
