India’s Foreign Minister Discusses Efforts to End Ukraine War

Jaisankar: We strive to be helpful

During a recent statement, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar described the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia as a “tragic conflict.” He reiterated that India’s stance on this issue has always been clear: the resolution requires dialogue and diplomacy.

“Negotiations are essential for this. We have been advocating for it for many years,” Jaishankar noted, pointing out that India has recently become “somewhat more involved than just advocacy.”

Jaishankar elaborated on India’s approach, stating, “We are engaging in discussions with both Russia and Ukraine. We aim to be helpful, starting with maritime security in the Black Sea, while also addressing urgent issues affecting both parties.” These issues include grain exports, energy supplies, and the potential for a ceasefire.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha mentioned at the end of September that India had ramped up its efforts towards achieving a ceasefire in the war initiated by Russia. “We are witnessing the first active peace efforts from this country. I hope this yields results,” he said, highlighting Jaishankar’s personal involvement in these initiatives.

During a press meeting on October 1, Sybiha revealed that Ukraine has proposals for an energy ceasefire and a ceasefire in the Black Sea, supported by four countries: the United States, India, Turkey, and Egypt. He noted that the most comprehensive proposal comes from India, stating, “For the first time, India has expressed a willingness to play a role.”
