Edi Iordănescu Proposes Changes to U21 Rule in Romanian Superliga

Edward Iordănescu, aged 48, has expressed his concerns regarding the current U21 rule in Romanian football, calling it unbeneficial and suggesting an alternative model.
Since the 2016/2017 season, the Romanian Football Federation has mandated that each team must have at least one player eligible for the youth national team on the field during matches. Currently, clubs in the Superliga are required to include at least one player born after January 1, 2004, in their starting lineup.

Iordănescu, who managed the Romanian national team from 2022 to 2024, believes that the rule should encourage rather than impose. He proposes, “Let’s modify the U21 rule to stimulate rather than enforce.”
His idea involves redirecting a portion of the broadcasting revenue received by clubs to incentivize the deployment of U21 players based on their playing time and number of matches. “This approach is more rational in my view,” he stated during the GSP podcast “2 la 1.”
He acknowledged that while the rule has had its benefits, it is often viewed as a burden by clubs. “Let’s reframe the U21 rule so that it incentivizes them rather than feels like a chore,” Iordănescu emphasized.
Essentially, he advocates for a model similar to Hungary’s, where there are no compulsory youth player requirements, but financial incentives are provided to clubs that incorporate junior players.
Focus on Quality Over Quantity
Iordănescu also addressed the issue of foreign players in the Superliga, suggesting a shift in perspective. “Instead of limiting foreign players, there should be a broader discussion among clubs about being more responsible in selecting international talent. I am open to welcoming foreign players, and many of our players aspire to play abroad. It’s impractical to restrict foreigners,” he remarked.
He believes it is crucial to bring in foreign athletes who add value to the competition, emphasizing the need for quality over mere numbers. “We should not just prioritize quantity, but ensure that foreign players enhance the overall level of our league,” Iordănescu concluded during the podcast “2 la 1.”
