“We are far from the forces, but it is a unique chance”

The Romanian national men's handball team will debut in the middle of this month at the European Championship, hosted by Denmark, Norway and Sweden, which takes place between January 15 and February 1, and the coach George Buricea has problems with the team before the final tournament.

The Tricolors are part of a fiery group and have been on a hell of a mission in the competition since the start of this year. The opponents will be the hosts from Denmark, world champion of the last four editions, Olympic champion and European vice-champion, Portugal and North Macedonia.

And the Romanian team suffers before participating in the European. Coordinators Erik Pop, Andrei Drăgan and Gabriel Ilie were injured and will not be able to help the tricolor national team

Daniel Stanciuc, the center of Dinamo, remained the only option for this position. Demis Grigoraș, Liviu Caba and Dan Vasile are Romania's other absences for the final tournament, according to welovesport.ro.

Optimism in the Romanian camp before the final tournament

“The responsibility is very big, I feel it, huge I could say. But there are also pleasant feelings. I can't wait for these matches. That's how I was as a handball player and now, as a coach. When you start handball, you think that you want to play in a European, a World Cup, Champions League matches. That's what you train for all your life. I'm sure the boys think the same.

I say that, from the moment I took over the team, the Romanian national team showed determination, played to the end. Even though we were driven, we didn't give up. We proved it in the matches at home, with Poland, with Portugal, with Israel. This is what I want to inspire them, to instill this mentality in them.

We are going to the European Championship with our heads up, not with our heads down because we are a small team. Yes, at least in men's, we are far from handball forces, but we can fight. We have a core of 10-12 players who can perform.

I showed it in the good matches played in the national team. We qualified by beating Portugal and that's no small thing. We lack infrastructure and other things that don't belong to us, but I hope to prove that Romania is on a good path and that we can return to the elite, as soon as possible”, said the selector George Buricea, for the source quoted above.

Let's enjoy handball. Let's enjoy this experience of playing against the best teams in world handball. They haven't lost a game in a long time, they beat France by 10 goals, what are we talking about? To play with Denmark at home, in front of 14,000 spectators, is a unique chance and we must give the maximum, to what possibilities we have. I hope the fear of making a laughingstock, of losing by a large margin does not come into play. I want him to understand that the match with Denmark is not pressure

– George Buricea, Romania selector
