France Begins Training Ukrainian Pilots for Rafale Jets Transfer

Training includes several stages

French officials have commenced discussions with Ukraine regarding the transfer of Rafale fighter jets, which will be operated by Ukrainian military personnel. On July 13, a roadmap was established between France and Ukraine outlining the acquisition of 16 Rafale jets along with their armaments. French President Emmanuel Macron indicated that the initial aircraft are anticipated to be operational in Ukrainian airspace by 2028-2029. According to Le Parisien, the first four jets could be delivered following the completion of pilot training.

The training program consists of several phases. Initially, Ukrainian pilots will undertake training on basic aircraft such as the Grob G-120TP and Dornier Alpha Jet, before progressing to more advanced fighter jets. In the long term, Ukraine may order up to 100 Rafale jets over the next decade, as reflected in a letter of intent signed by Macron and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on November 17, 2025.

However, it is important to note that a final contract for the supply of the jets has yet to be signed. Aviation analysts consider the timeline for delivering the aircraft by 2028-2029 as tight, given that Dassault Aviation currently produces three jets per month. The cost of procurement and financing mechanisms remain undefined as well.
