Ukrainian Drone Attack Sparks Fire at Russian Arctic Facility

A Ukrainian drone strike ignited a fire at a gas processing facility in Novy Urengoy, located in Russia’s Yamalo-Nenets region, approximately 3,200 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, according to reports from AFP and Kyiv Post.

Mediazona, a Russian publication, claims this incident marks the longest-range attack by Ukraine on Russian territory since the onset of the war in February 2022.

Regional governor Dmitry Artiukhov reported via Telegram, “A drone attack on an industrial facility in Novy Urengoy was repelled today. Debris from the drone caused a fire.”

He emphasized, “The main thing is that there were no fatalities or injuries. The extent and nature of the damage are being assessed.”

Novy Urengoy, a city with a population of around 100,000, is located just south of the Arctic Circle.

The facility is a crucial part of the region’s gas and condensate infrastructure, with a designed capacity of approximately 19.5 million tons per year.

Ukrainian Company Claims Successful Long-Distance Strike

The Ukrainian defense company Fire Point stated that the drone “traveled over 3,300 kilometers and struck its target successfully.”

In a social media post, representatives from the company boasted, “Guess who traveled over 3,300 kilometers and successfully hit the target?”

Artem Joga, the Kremlin’s representative for the Urals, remarked that this was the first attack to successfully hit the Arctic part of his jurisdiction.

In recent months, Ukraine has ramped up long-range attacks against Russia in retaliation for daily bombardments by Russian forces on Ukrainian cities.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated earlier in September that Ukrainian drones would make Russian airspace “completely dangerous” for the duration of the war.
