In a recent statement, President Donald Trump proposed renaming the Strait of Hormuz to “Trump Strait,” asserting that, “Now that it is under US control, shouldn’t we rename the Hormuz Strait to ‘Trump Strait’? Just like America, it will become ‘hotter’ than ever before!” This remark was made in the context of growing US influence in the region.
Reports from CNN in August indicated that Iran has lost significant control over parts of the strait, with the US strengthening its position there. However, no official announcement confirming complete US control has been made.
Earlier, on August 27, amidst trade disputes with Canada, Trump signed an order to rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America.” Last year, he changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the American Gulf and renamed Denali, the highest peak in the US, to Mount McKinley, after the 25th president who was assassinated in 1901.
Context
- The active phase of conflict between Iran and the US began on February 28 this year, when US and Israeli airstrikes targeted Iran, resulting in the deaths of several high-ranking officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
- On April 12, President Trump announced a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz by US naval forces. By May 28, the US and Iran reached a 60-day memorandum on a ceasefire and began discussions regarding Tehran’s nuclear program.
