On Sunday night, Putin proposed direct Russian-Ukrainian conversations “without preliminary conditions”. According to the Kremlin, these negotiations are to start on Thursday in Istanbul.
Even on Monday, US President Donald Trump said that it is possible that he would go to Turkey himself, “if he thinks it would be helpful.” On Tuesday, the White House announced that the Russian-Ukrainian talks to Istanbul would go to the Secretary of State Marco Rubio and special envoys, Steve Witkoff and Keith Kellogg. Media reports, however, did not rule out the final presence of the president.
In an interview with journalists, Trump noted that he seemed to “the President of Russia would like him to be there.” On Wednesday, Vladimir Putin approved the composition of the Russian delegation for talks with Ukraine. Ultimately, Vladimir Miedinski, who is the adviser to the President of Russia, will head the delegation. He will be accompanied by Mikhail Guzin – Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Igor Kostiukow – head of the Main Department of the General Staff of the Armed Forces and Aleksander Fomin – Deputy Minister of Defense. The announcement also indicated the names of four experts.
Donald Trump will not go to Turkey
Providing the composition of the delegation means that Vladimir Putin will not take part in peaceful negotiations, as Wołodymyr Zelnski appealed. According to Reuters, Donald Trump confirmed that he would not take part in them either.
In turn, the Ukrainian official announced that the President of Ukraine is already on his way to Turkey. Zełenski will first go to Ankara, where he is to meet the President of Turkey by Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Then, in Istanbul, meetings of the Ukrainian and Russian delegation are planned.
