A Qatar Amiri Flight-operated Boeing 747-8 has arrived in Mallorca from Doha, coinciding with the Qatari royal family’s preparations for the total solar eclipse on August 12, 2026. This journey could enhance an already lavish Mediterranean getaway by placing the family at the center of one of nature’s most spectacular events.
Though there has been no official confirmation regarding whether Qatar’s wealthy emir, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, was aboard the luxurious aircraft, the timing of the trip is noteworthy, according to Luxurylaunches, a lifestyle publication for the world’s elite.
The royal jet touched down in Mallorca on August 10, 2026, just before the eclipse, as confirmed by the Majorca Daily Bulletin. Palma de Mallorca is among the locations where the eclipse will be fully visible, offering the island’s spectators a rare opportunity to witness this celestial phenomenon, albeit with the Sun positioned quite low on the horizon.
This situation raises questions since the total solar eclipse on August 12 would not be viewable from Qatar, necessitating the royal family to travel abroad to see this rare astronomical event.
Not Your Average Boeing 747
The Qatari emir’s aircraft is not merely a commercial Boeing 747 with passenger seats removed. It is a factory-built Boeing Business Jet, operated by Qatar Amiri Flight, the state’s VIP fleet. The aircraft associated with the Mallorca trip, registered as A7-HHE, was the first Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental delivered to any client, arriving on February 28, 2012, ahead of the first 747-8I operated by Lufthansa.
Its maiden flight occurred on January 30, 2012, before being delivered in factory condition for extensive VIP customization. Modifications were made by Greenpoint Aeroloft and Lufthansa Technik, and the aircraft entered complete service around 2016.
Measuring approximately 76.3 meters in length and with a wingspan of 68.4 meters, this aircraft is massive even by jumbo standards. Its wingspan places it in category F under ICAO regulations, explaining the additional operational requirements previously imposed on Palma de Mallorca Airport. Air traffic controllers have noted that the jet can only use one of the airport’s runways, which must be inspected after it takes off.
The 747-8 BBJ has a stated range of about 8,840 nautical miles, meaning the roughly 3,000-mile (approximately 4,828 kilometers) journey from Doha to Mallorca is just a fraction of its maximum range. Inside, the aircraft resembles a flying palace rather than a standard airliner, offering over 465 square meters dedicated to VIP areas.
It can accommodate around 89 passengers and 14 crew members, equipped with 11 bathrooms, five kitchens, and a private office, along with a wide range of VIP amenities. Its estimated value stands at approximately $400 million, placing it among the most expensive private jets worldwide.

The eclipse presented a particularly compelling reason for this journey. As the total eclipse would not be visible from Qatar, the next one expected to be seen from Doha won’t occur until 2081. Conversely, Mallorca lies within the path of totality, close to the eastern end of the eclipse. The Spanish island was anticipated to enjoy about 96 seconds of totality, with the Sun hovering near the horizon, making an unobstructed view towards the sea especially valuable.
Choosing Mallorca was interesting beyond the eclipse event itself. The Qatari royal family has a long-standing connection to the island, ensuring that necessary security measures, airport infrastructure, hospitality, and maritime services are well-known. The family regularly spends summers there, and their yacht, “Al Lusail,” has frequently been spotted in the waters surrounding Mallorca.
For observing the eclipse, a yacht could prove particularly useful due to the Sun’s low position. A clear view towards the sea would eliminate many obstacles that could obstruct the spectacle on land, especially since a vessel has the freedom to navigate if clouds threaten visibility. While Mallorca may not provide the longest totality duration along the eclipse’s path, it effectively combines access to the event with a luxurious, familiar destination for the Qatari royal family.
