Hungarian Politician Advocates for 16-Year-Old Voting Rights

Madar highlights youth interest in politics in Hungary

Peter Madar has expressed his belief that young people in Hungary are increasingly engaging with politics and societal issues, stating it has become “cool” to do so. He argues that it is crucial for this demographic to have the right to vote.

“I am convinced that the vast majority of individuals under 18 are well-prepared and informed enough to participate in our collective decisions. During the constitutional drafting process, I would support lowering the voting age to 16,” he remarked.

Currently, there are no official moves to implement such changes. The decision on whether to amend voting laws will be made in the future. Madar’s comments come in the context of constitutional reviews following the tenure of his predecessor, Viktor Orban.

He also expressed pride in the achievements of the new government, noting that more people than ever are following parliamentary sessions and engaging in the shaping of public life.

Context

  • According to Hungary’s National Election Office, Madar’s party, Tisza, won over 50% of the votes and secured a constitutional majority in the parliamentary elections on April 12. In his victory speech, Madar stated that the Hungarian people said “yes” to Europe and a free Hungary.
  • On the same day, Viktor Orban, leader of the Fidesz party and then-prime minister, acknowledged his defeat and congratulated his opponent on the victory.
