A dramatic match unfolded in the UEFA Conference League qualifying round as Malta’s Hamrun Spartans were eliminated by NSI Runavik from the Faroe Islands due to a contentious penalty awarded in stoppage time.
As the match neared its conclusion, Hamrun had engaged in a fierce battle after narrowly losing the first leg. The visitors initially took the lead with a goal from Michal Przybylski, but NSI equalized in the second half through a spectacular volley from Ante Coric, a former prospect of AS Roma.
Controversy erupted in the final moments of the match when NSI’s Tobias Hestad chased down a ball near the goal line and crossed it back into the area. Video replays suggested that the ball had gone out of play before the cross, yet referee Jeremy Muller and his assistant allowed the game to continue.
