Trump Agrees to New Talks with Iran, But Ends Ceasefire

Former President Donald Trump announced that the United States has agreed to resume negotiations with Iran, stating, “The Islamic Republic of Iran has approached us to continue talks. We have agreed to this, but the United States has made it clear that the ceasefire has ENDED!” Trump made these remarks amid an escalating conflict.
Context surrounding this announcement is crucial. The active phase of war between Iran and the United States began on February 28 of this year, when the U.S., alongside Israel, launched airstrikes on Iranian territory, resulting in the deaths of several high-ranking officials, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
On May 28, the United States and Iran reached a 60-day ceasefire agreement and initiated talks about Tehran’s nuclear program. Following this, on June 1, Trump claimed he had fulfilled Iran’s condition for a cessation of hostilities between Israel and Lebanon.
However, on the night of June 18, the U.S. and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding to end the war, but soon after, both nations exchanged attacks again. Consequently, Trump stated that the ceasefire was discontinued, asserting, “I no longer want to have anything to do with them because they are scum. You know what scum is? They are scum. They are sick people.” Subsequently, the former president announced a massive bombardment of Iran.
