Albanian Government Defends €4 Million Payment for Kanye West Concert

The Albanian government, under Prime Minister Edi Rama, is facing backlash over its decision to allocate €4 million for the upcoming concert of American rapper Kanye West in Tirana. Reports indicate that ticket sales have been disappointing.

The government’s financial support for the Saturday concert has drawn criticism from opposition parties and artistic groups within the country. This announcement comes during a time of protests calling for Rama’s resignation, initially sparked by a luxury real estate project linked to the Trump family in the southern part of Albania.

Blendi Gonxhja, the Albanian Minister of Culture, released a statement addressing the criticism surrounding the concert. He emphasized the significance of the event in positioning Tirana on the “map of capitals hosting such major events.”

“The success of a concert is not solely measured by ticket sales,” he stated, highlighting the anticipated benefits for the tourism sector as a result of the concert.

Kanye West, also known by his stage name Ye, has previously faced backlash due to his antisemitic and pro-Nazi remarks. He has since retracted those statements, attributing them to bipolar disorder. Nonetheless, he was banned from performing in several European countries this summer.

Criticism from Local Artists

The Albanian government’s funding announcement has sparked outrage among the country’s artistic community, with a group staging a protest outside the ministry on Thursday.

In statements made to AFP on Friday, contemporary art curator Andi Tepelena accused Prime Minister Edi Rama of prioritizing funding for an artist who “has supported fascism, antisemitism, and justified slavery” while Albania faces numerous urgent issues.

For the concert, which required the construction of a special structure on the outskirts of the Albanian capital, attendance was projected at 60,000. However, local media have reported that ticket sales have ultimately fallen short of expectations.

Minister Gonxhja also mentioned that the creation of a temporary arena cost approximately €2.2 million, refuting claims that it could have reached up to €60 million.
