Trump Ties U.S. Troop Withdrawal in Europe to Greenland Agreement

President Donald Trump has suggested that any potential reduction of U.S. troops stationed in Europe could be linked to negotiations over Greenland’s future. During a flight on Air Force One, Trump stated, “I haven’t made a final decision yet. A lot will depend on Greenland,” when asked about the possibility of troop withdrawals. He added, “Maybe I will.”

Trump emphasized that the decision would largely hinge on whether he can secure what he termed “a very good deal regarding Greenland.” This statement comes shortly after his arrival at the NATO summit in Ankara, where he reiterated his belief that Greenland, currently part of the Kingdom of Denmark, “should be controlled by the United States.” An unnamed senior U.S. official previously indicated that acquiring Greenland is viewed as a way to address long-term security risks surrounding the island.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen firmly rejected Trump’s assertion, stating, “We are prepared to defend every inch of NATO, including our own territory… Of course, we will defend the Kingdom of Denmark,” reiterating that Greenland is not for sale.

Trump Says He Won’t Forcefully Take Greenland

Since returning to the White House in January of last year, Trump has openly threatened to take control of Greenland, affecting U.S. relations with Denmark, a NATO ally, and raising concerns about the cohesion of the most powerful military force in the world, as well as mutual loyalty within NATO. Trump’s justification is that Greenland would be vulnerable to threats from Russia and China, thus posing a concern for U.S. security interests.

The U.S. president later retracted his threat to use military force if necessary to achieve this goal and withdrew previous announcements regarding punitive tariffs against Germany and other European nations if they did not agree to the U.S. taking control of the island. However, he has maintained his claims over Greenland, which the governments of Denmark and Greenland have consistently rejected.
