Ukrainian Forces Confirm Control Over Kostyantynivka Amid Russian Claims

Russians have turned the city into ruins

The Ukrainian military has firmly stated that the Russian regime is once again spreading falsehoods in an effort to present a fabricated narrative as reality.

Statements claiming that Kostyantynivka has been captured are merely another piece of disinformation intended to create an illusion of success in the face of significant personnel losses and failed objectives. The real situation is different, as indicated in a video accompanying the statement.

The video shows members of the Armed Forces of Ukraine stationed in various areas of the city, confirming that Kostyantynivka remains under the control of Ukrainian defense forces.

Soldiers noted that Russian troops continue to attempt infiltration and advance through isolated groups; however, the Ukrainian forces are effectively detecting these movements and neutralizing the occupiers.

The Armed Forces urged the public to rely solely on official information sources.

Kostyantynivka stands resilient. Ukrainian defense forces are maintaining their operational objectives, as conveyed in official communications.

Context

  • On July 3, Russian propaganda showcased a video of a meeting allegedly held by the illegitimate Russian President Vladimir Putin, who was informed that Kostyantynivka had supposedly been occupied by Russian forces. This claim was denied by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the morning of July 4, stating that fighting continues for the city.
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky noted that Moscow is simulating “achievements” on the front for the United States, trying to impress US President Donald Trump. He suggested that Putin personally visit Kostyantynivka for a meeting, claiming the city is already “controlled” by Russia. However, Putin’s spokesperson Dmitry Peskov dismissed Zelensky’s suggestion, stating that he is expected in Moscow.
  • Kostyantynivka is regarded as the “gateway” to parts of Donbas controlled by Ukraine. The city is part of a defensive line in Donetsk Oblast along with Slovyansk, Kramatorsk, Druzhkivka, and other towns. This defensive belt has resisted Russian advances since 2014. In February, ISW indicated that the loss of these cities would ease further Russian progression into Ukraine.
