The head of European diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, said on Wednesday that the reaction to the violation of the Poland air space has shown that Europe can defend itself, but that additional measures are needed, according to Reuters.
Poland said he mobilized his own air and NATO forces on Wednesday to break down Drone, after an air attack on Russia over the western Ukraine, being for the first time since the beginning of the war when Warsaw hired forces in his airspace.
“The drones have been shot down, which means we are able to defend ourselves, but it is clear that we have to do more,” Kallas Journalists told.
“What happened in Poland changes the rules of the game. We must have a very strong answer,” she added. “Russia deliberately climbing. We must be very firm.”
Kallas also stressed the need to adopt new sanctions against Russia.
The Russian Ministry of Defense transmitted on Wednesday, in an official statement that its drones have made a major attack on western Ukraine's military facilities, but that he did not intend to hit any goals in Poland, informs Reuters, The Guardian and Sky News.
Warsaw has officially requested activation of Article 4 of NATO Treaty
Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on Wednesday that Poland will invoke Article 4 of the NATO treaty, requesting a formal consultation in the Alliance, a measure agreed between him and President Karol Nawrocki.
Tusk stated, at the same time that, although it appreciates all the manifestations of solidarity, “words are not enough” and Poland will request “much greater” support from NATO allies.
Article 4 of the Treaty provides: “The parties will consult each other whenever, in the opinion of any of them, territorial integrity, political independence or security of any of the parties is threatened.”
Article 4 was invoked only seven times since the establishment of NATO in 1949, the last time in 2022, immediately after the debut of Russia's invasion in Ukraine.
