Kylian Mbappe Achieves Historic Milestone at 2026 World Cup

Kylian Mbappe, at 27 years old, made headlines by scoring two goals for France in their Round of 16 match against Sweden at the 2026 World Cup, bringing his total to 18 goals in World Cup history.

The captain of France opened the scoring in the 45th minute after maneuvering into the box and finishing perfectly into the far corner. He added his second goal in the 74th minute, set up perfectly by Olise.

With his performance against Sweden, Mbappe now has six goals in the current tournament, matching Lionel Messi’s tally for this World Cup edition. He had previously scored doubles in group stage victories against Senegal (3-1) and Iraq (3-0).

Currently, Mbappe ranks second in the all-time World Cup scoring list, just one goal behind Argentina’s Lionel Messi, who has six goals in three matches at this tournament.

Before this World Cup, the record was held by Miroslav Klose, who netted 16 goals for Germany.

Mbappe reached a milestone with his 102nd appearance for the French national team, contributing 62 goals and 42 assists during his tenure.

He has already secured two trophies with the French national team: the World Cup in 2018 and the UEFA Nations League in 2021.

In addition, Mbappe concluded his second season at Real Madrid with 42 goals and 6 assists across 44 appearances in all competitions. He joined Real Madrid on a free transfer in 2024 after spending seven seasons at PSG, where he was acquired from Monaco for €180 million, making it the second most expensive transfer in history, behind Neymar’s move from Barcelona to PSG for €222 million.
