Vens Outlines Key Objectives for Iran Negotiations in Switzerland

Negotiation process will occur at two levels

Before departing for Switzerland, Vice President Vens highlighted that the negotiation process regarding Iran will occur on two levels: political and technical.

Political leaders will set the overarching direction, while technical teams will engage directly on-site. Vens stated his intention to stay in Switzerland for only “a day or two,” but he hopes for significant progress on issues related to Iran’s nuclear program.

He also addressed the critical situation in Lebanon, where ongoing hostilities require constant monitoring and management by international mediators. Additionally, he acknowledged that the Iranian delegation would also bring its own agenda for discussion during the talks.

Contextually, U.S. President Donald Trump has consistently opposed Iran’s possession of nuclear weapons, demanding negotiations for a “fair and equitable deal – without nuclear weapons.” Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed talks with the U.S. delegation scheduled for February 6 in Oman. However, following military operations declared by the U.S. and Israel in Iran on February 28, tensions mounted as Tehran threatened a “devastating” response, leading to a near halt in shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and a sharp increase in oil prices. Notably, on June 14, coinciding with Trump’s 80th birthday, the U.S. and Iran announced a deal between the two nations.
