Istvan Kovacs Officiates Landmark 1000th World Cup Match

Romanian referee Istvan Kovacs, aged 41, officiated the milestone 1000th match in World Cup history, pitting Japan against Tunisia in the second round of Group F. During the first half, Kovacs encountered a critical moment where he sought assistance from the VAR to make a pivotal decision, with Japan leading 1-0.
Assisting Kovacs for the match were linesmen Mihai Marica and Ferencz Tunyogi.
The Japanese team took an early lead in the 4th minute with a goal from Daichi Kamada. However, they nearly doubled their advantage shortly after, only for Tunisian goalkeeper Aymen Dahmen to make a crucial save at the last moment. This moment was particularly intricate, as it required a review to determine if the ball fully crossed the goal line.
Kovacs Remains Composed During Critical First Half Play
Takehiro Tomiyasu struck a powerful shot, yet Dahmen managed to prevent the ball from crossing the line by mere milliseconds.
Kovacs, who faced few challenges in the first half, chose to take his time with the most complex situation and awaited guidance from the VAR. The replay confirmed that the ball came mere millimeters from crossing the line, which would have validated the goal.
Ultimately, the Japanese extended their lead to 2-0 with a goal from Ueda, entering halftime with a two-goal advantage over Tunisia.
In the opening moments, Japan appealed for a penalty in the 2nd minute after Ayase Ueda fell in the box following a challenge by Ellyes Skhiri, but Kovacs stood firm and did not award the spot kick.
Kovacs Celebrates 1000th World Cup Match Assignment
The match served as a significant career milestone for Kovacs, who had the honor of officiating the 1000th match in World Cup history, having not been appointed to any prior games in the tournament’s first ten days.
Pierluigi Collina, head of refereeing, presented Kovacs with a special uniform featuring gold stripes, which the Romanian referee wore for the Sunday morning duel.
This match was Kovacs’ debut as the main referee at a World Cup, though he had been present as a reserve in eight previous matches during the 2022 tournament in Qatar.
Kovacs is distinguished as the only referee in history to officiate the finals of all three major European club competitions: the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League.
