James Burrows, a prominent director known for his work on iconic series such as “Friends” and “The Big Bang Theory,” has passed away. His agent, Rick Rosen, confirmed the news, though details regarding the cause and location of death have not been released.

Burrows, often referred to as the “Steven Spielberg of sitcoms,” garnered 11 Emmy Awards and received 47 nominations throughout his storied career. The New York Times recognized him as a pivotal figure whose “visual style and comedic sensibility helped generate more hits than anyone else on television.”

In describing his talent, Burrows once stated that he had a “gift for creating families” on screen. Notably, he played a crucial role in casting for the beloved series “Friends.” Before filming the pilot episode, he took the future main cast to Las Vegas to help them bond prior to the show’s production.

Even at the age of 80, Burrows remained active in television, showcasing his enduring passion for directing. In 2023, he shared with reporters that the greatest reward of his work was the laughter of his audience, expressing that he would nearly work for free just to hear it.
