Roberto Martinez Highlights Positives Despite Portugal’s Draw with DR Congo

Portugal faced a surprising 1-1 draw against the Democratic Republic of Congo in their opening match of the World Cup. Following the game, head coach Roberto Martinez elaborated on the reasons behind the team’s inability to secure a victory.

The Portuguese team initially controlled the match, quickly taking the lead. However, they failed to score again and were equalized before halftime by a well-organized African side.

Roberto Martinez’s Post-Match Comments: “This is What the World Cup Means”

After the match, Martinez noted that his players lost some intensity after scoring and reverted too soon to a possession-focused style of play, allowing their opponents to get back into the game.

Despite the draw, the coach expressed satisfaction with the players’ attitude, believing that such a setback can prove beneficial as the tournament progresses.

Martinez opined that encountering challenges during the group stage is preferable, as it allows for error correction before the knockout rounds, where mistakes can be critical.

“We started the match very well. However, after scoring, we lost our offensive presence and ability to penetrate the opponent’s area. We became too focused on maintaining possession and had fewer actions in the final third. This allowed DR Congo to regroup and enter the match. The goal we conceded right before halftime from a set piece came against a team that executes such situations well,” Martinez stated.

He added, “This is what the World Cup is about. Now, we need to assess and analyze what happened. I did, however, appreciate the players’ attitude. In the second half, we were more aggressive and reached the opponent’s final third more frequently. This is part of the World Cup process; it’s better to have a match like this in the group stage and then improve from game to game, as the team’s attitude has been very good. The individual aspects that need improvement were evident in this match,” he concluded.

Portugal will continue their World Cup journey against Uzbekistan on June 23, with kickoff scheduled for 20:00. The other Group K match between Uzbekistan and Colombia will take place on June 18 at 05:00.

“It was important to modify our attacking approach. DR Congo had a very solid defensive structure and won many duels. The introduction of Francisco Conceicao provided new solutions, and Semedo also offered something different. It’s vital to have a player like Rafael Leao and a striker like Goncalo Ramos for presence in the box. We don’t need to win the World Cup in the first match. We must play well and focus on our duties on the field without bearing the weight of trophy pressure. Our goal is to accumulate as many points as possible in the group stage,” Martinez remarked.
