US Vice President J.D. Vance will decide whether to run in the 2028 Republican presidential election following the midterm elections for the US Congress. He stated this in an interview with CBS News, which was published on June 14.
Americans will reelect the entire House of Representatives and about a third of the Senate on November 3, 2026.
Vance indicated that he expects US President Donald Trump to have “very active support” in any decision he makes.
At the moment, according to the vice president, his political future is not a priority. He noted that he is not “sitting around wondering whether to run for president.”
Vance also stressed that he never initiates a discussion of his future plans with the president.
“I never raise this topic. But, of course, the president often raises it, sometimes publicly, sometimes privately. You see, the president is a political fanatic. He loves all this. He is very fascinated by it,” the vice president said.
Vance is perhaps the most prominent of the Republicans who are widely viewed within the party as potential contenders in the 2028 election, CBS News notes. Other possible candidates mentioned by GOP insiders include Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and a range of U.S. senators and conservative figures, from Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Missouri) to media personalities such as conservative journalist Tucker Carlson.
