Loach Green

In Rus', on this day they celebrated the holiday of the Green Vyun – or, as it was also called, Vyunets. It is one of the ancient Russian rituals. It’s difficult to say exactly what its essence is now. However, it is known that on this holiday the villagers gathered in the morning outside the outskirts, and then walked in a crowd through the streets and sang songs that they dedicated to the couples who got married that year.

In the evening, young people gathered for games. The girls danced in circles and wove wreaths from loach – for good luck, for their betrothed. As they said, “weave our future with our thoughts.” The guys fought with their fists and fought one on one.

Houses on this day were decorated with birch branches and wreaths. A freshly baked loaf was always placed on the table.
