A date of snow leopards with elements of flirting was caught on video in a nature reserve in the south of the Krasnoyarsk Territory

In the Sayano-Shushensky Nature Reserve, they showed unique footage of two snow leopards meeting – a female named Hooliganka and a male Mezhela.

In front of a camera trap, their date took place with elements of feline tenderness and flirtation.

The footage shows how a young, capricious female shows an increased and even obsessive interest in her gentleman: when meeting, she is not shy and “butts” him with her forehead, accompanying this action with a low grumbling. The male, who is about four years old, responds to this onslaught with restraint: he presses himself to the ground, demonstrating trust, after which the pair begins to tumble together and study each other.

As Roman Afanasyev, a senior researcher at the reserve, said, for the uninitiated, such behavior may seem like aggression, but for snow leopards it is a language of sympathy and a sign of greeting:

“This is not just a game, but a welcoming ritual of getting to know each other. The hooligan has just separated from her mother and is actively searching for an individual plot. The male Mezhel is a new inhabitant of the reserve: he came from the “Khan-Deer” cluster site of the “Ubsunur Basin” nature reserve at the end of December 2025 and is now also defining the boundaries of his territory. At the moment, their habitats overlap each other. In the next mating season, there is a high probability of forming a pair that can produce offspring and replenish the population of the Western Sayan group. Although snow leopards are considered loners, this footage proves otherwise. Snow leopards are social animals, capable of complex communications between relatives even outside the breeding season. Now everything is just beginning for Mezhel and Hooliganka. In the meantime, we can only watch their first timid steps towards each other.”
