In Europe and around the world, retirement age is increasingly no longer a fixed number, but depends on life expectancy and the condition of state finances. It is also worth remembering that comparing pension systems is not easy, because not only the statutory age matters, but also the pace of changes and the actual moment of ending work.
The discussion about the retirement age – and specifically its lowering or raising – has been going on in Poland for many years. Demographic data are inexorable, which is why many experts suggest increasing the moment when you can legally end your professional activity.
Where is the highest retirement age?
Poland has one of the lowest thresholds in Europe – 60 years for women and 65 years for men. This is the result of political decisions and social acceptance, and not only the level of economic development. And which country has the highest retirement age? Which country has the lowest retirement age?
As the Rynekonline.pl website explains, in Europe the highest statutory threshold is 67 years of age – including: in Denmark, Norway and Germany. Denmark is planning further increases, linking the retirement age with life expectancy. Even the number of 74 years for people retiring in 2060 comes up in the debate.

Among European countries, France raised the retirement age to 64 a few years ago. In Germany, the threshold is 67 years, while in Great Britain the limit is currently set at 68 years. And it is there – as well as in Ireland – that the retirement age is currently the highest in Europe.
Which country has the highest retirement age?
In turn, as a counterweight – as noted by Rynekonline.pl – the lowest retirement age is currently in Moldova, where women can retire at the age of 57, and men at the age of 62.
Most retirement age ceilings are between 60 and 65 years old. However, in Saudi Arabia, for example, men retire at the age of 60 and women at 55. In Turkey, the retirement age has been equalized and is now 58 years old.

In Russia, the limits are set at 62 for men and 57 for women. In turn, in China, the retirement age for men is 60 years, and for women it is either 55 or 50 years, depending on the sector in which they work.
As Rynekonline.pl emphasizes, retirement age is not always one number – it varies depending on the country, gender, profession or length of service. For example, in the USA you can receive the benefit from the age of 62, but with a reduction. Japan encourages people to work even after the age of 65.
