Ilie Bolojan is the first Romanian leader to travel to Chisinau after the announcement of the opening of the first cluster of negotiations for the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union, according to a PNL press release.

Recently, the ambassadors of the EU member states gathered in COREPER approved the opening of Cluster 1, named “Core Values”in the accession negotiations with the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine.

The next step is the organization of the EU-Republic of Moldova and EU-Ukraine Intergovernmental Conferences, scheduled for Monday, June 15, 2026, in Luxembourg.

“Ilie Bolojan's participation in the PAS Congress conveys Romania's constant support for the European path of the Republic of Moldova and for the deepening of relations between the two states”according to the cited source.

Ilie Bolojan's last visit to Chisinau took place at the end of May, when he participated in an event dedicated to the reform of local public administration. However, he interrupted his official program after a drone crashed on a block of flats in Galati.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced on Friday, June 12, that the 27 member states of the European Union agreed to open the first group of accession negotiations for Ukraine and Moldova, thus marking a new important step in the process of expanding the EU bloc.

The decision was confirmed ahead of the first Intergovernmental Conference scheduled for Monday, when it will officially open “fundamentals chapter”considered essential in the structure of the accession negotiations.
