Sour gooseberries with a thick skin are a sign that you are making some mistakes in caring for the plant, warns the expert of the Zen channel “Dachny Agronomist”. To fix this, feed the gooseberries with a special fertilizer, and also follow simple rules of agricultural technology.
How to feed gooseberries at the beginning of summer
In June, be sure to feed the gooseberries with mineral fertilizer – it will make the berries juicy, sweet and large.
You will need:
- nitrogen – 10 g;
- phosphorus – 20 g;
- potassium – 15 g.
Mix these fertilizers in a bucket of water and pour it over the gooseberries.
And in July-August it is useful to feed the gooseberries at the root with wood ash. The potassium and phosphorus contained in it will help the plant to better lay buds for the next season.
Mistakes when growing gooseberries
If the bush is in the shade, then photosynthesis stops – and this process is responsible for the production of sugar in the berries. Therefore, cut out all the old branches more often, remove young shoots from the center – this way the plant will receive both light and oxygen.
Don't forget about one secret of watering. At the flowering stage and at the beginning of the formation of ovaries, the soil in the root zone should be moist. However, during the filling and ripening of berries, watering is strictly stopped. Otherwise, the berries will begin to crack and become sour and watery.
