We will have an extremely tough election campaign

The future election campaign in Ukraine may be “extremely tough” regardless of the format of the political cycle. This opinion was expressed by Advisor to the Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Mikhail Podolyak in an interview with LIGA.net, published on May 25.

He emphasized that it is possible to hold elections only after the end of the active phase of the Russian-Ukrainian war, which, according to him, will definitely not end now due to the position of the aggressor country.

Podolyak also suggested that elections could take place approximately in the spring of 2027, provided that the situation stabilizes after the cessation of hostilities in the fall of 2026.

When asked by a journalist whether the authorities are aware of their “debt to society” due to the lack of elections during the war, Podolyak replied: “Absolutely.”

“And I think that we will have an extremely tough election campaign, an electoral cycle. Regardless of whether it will be presidential-parliamentary or presidential, it will be quite tough,” said the adviser to the head of the OP.

Podolyak believes that Ukraine will go through a difficult period of political competition after the war, comparing such processes with the experience of other countries after World War II. He mentioned French leader Charles de Gaulle and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who, despite their authority as military leaders, subsequently lost elections due to changing public sentiment.
