USR, the decisive piece. The party, face to face with a crucial decision: will it support the Tomac Government or not?

The Political Committee of the Save Romania Union (USR) entered an online meeting on Friday, from 17:00, during which the party's leaders will decide the most difficult strategy: whether or not they will support the investiture of the Government led by Eugen Tomac.

The final decision will be communicated publicly by USR president Dominic Fritz, who will broadcast a live video message on the official Facebook page of the formation immediately after the meeting, according to a press office announcement.

The base of the party tends to refuse to support the Tomac Government and wants USR to go into opposition, where the liberals led by Ilie Bolojan have also announced that they will withdraw. But this step would trigger a break with the president Nicușor Dan.

If the USR decides in favor of the Tomac Government, they will be accused of betrayal by their own voters because they side with the PSD and the rest of the parties in this formula. USR is the decisive piece: their vote can block the Tomac Cabinet or, on the contrary, gather around it the majority it needs.

On Monday, after the meeting with Tomac, USR leader Dominic Fritz said that “USR finds it difficult to support a Tomac government”, stating that the final decision was to be made after internal consultations.

The USR leader then argued that a technocratic government supported by the PSD would have a weak position in trying to continue the reforms promoted by the current coalition and reiterated that the formation prefers a government formula in which it is represented.

Discussions within the party take place against the backdrop of tense political dynamics. During Thursday, the leadership of the National Liberal Party (PNL) decided, unanimously, that it will not vote to support the Tomac Government, thus complicating the parliamentary calculations.

Previously, the Minister of Defense, Radu Miruță (USR) stated that the Save Romania Union intends to consult both the leaders of the county branches and the party's parliamentarians before making a decision.

He emphasized that the opinions expressed will also be analyzed in the context of the position expressed by President Nicușor Dan, who supports the version of a government led by Eugen Tomac.

The result of Friday's meeting is considered essential for shaping the parliamentary majority needed to inaugurate the new Executive.

The government proposed by Eugen Tomac seems to have less and less chance of obtaining the necessary support, according to the statements of the main political leaders. For now, the political formations have drawn clear red lines, but avoid saying which form of government they would support next. The list of difficulties is expanding, more and more of the people circulated for ministerial positions announcing that they refuse to be nominated.
