Polish activist Monika Silva is dead. She died in Ecuador


Monica Silva's body was found on Monday in her home in the seaside town of Montañita in the province of Santa Elena. The local prosecutor's office and Interior Minister John Reimberg confirmed that proceedings had been initiated to determine the cause of death. The head of the ministry suggested that it could have been a suicide, but there is no information confirming these reports, according to the local media, including the newspaper “El Universo”.

Position of the European Union

The European Union delegation to Ecuador published a statement expressing concern over the death of a “European citizen and anti-corruption activist” and expressed condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased. EU representatives also called on the “appropriate authorities” to conduct a prompt, independent and transparent investigation.

Attention was also drawn to the risks associated with the activist's work in Ecuador. “The European Union emphasizes the importance of ensuring protection for human rights defenders, journalists and civil society activists, as well as creating safe conditions for the use of civic space in Ecuador,” we read.

According to the local Ecuavisa television, Monika Silva has been living with her family in Ecuador for over 10 years. She was associated with the La Integridad Foundation, which publicizes corruption cases – especially in matters relating to environmental protection and public contracts. A few months ago, she reported on social media that she had received death threats. Her commitment to fighting irregularities made her a recognizable figure in the Santa Elena region.
