Cardiac surgeons from the Novosibirsk National Medical Research Center named after Academician E. N. Meshalkin for the first time in Russia and the CIS implanted a new device for long-term mechanical heart support in a patient. This was reported by the center's press service.
The first patient was a 53-year-old man with dilated cardiomyopathy. He is on the waiting list for a donor heart at the Meshalkin Center. The device is a pump that helps the heart pump blood. Such devices are used in patients with severe heart failure, including while waiting for a transplant.
“This is the first implantation of a mechanical heart support device, new to Russian practice, not only in Russia, but also in the CIS. The device showed itself to be truly high-tech and carefully designed,” said Evgeniy Tarasyuk, General Director of the Meshalkin Center.
According to him, the new device is lighter and more convenient for the patient than analogues of the same group. This is especially important since in some cases a person lives with such a device for years. The press service of the center explained that the peculiarity of the Chinese development is dynamic magnetic levitation. The rotor, which pumps blood, is in a magnetic field and not only rotates, but also performs vertical vibrations.
This technology helps to avoid areas of blood stagnation inside the pump and reduce the risk of blood clots after surgery. The weight of the device is 90 grams. This is two times less than pumps from other manufacturers operating on a similar principle. The Meshalkin Center plans to expand the experience of using the new system.
