What will Trump present as “victory” in Iran? “I need a document and a few commitments”

When the US and Israel launched a war against the ayatollahs in late February, they set themselves four main goals: stopping Iran's nuclear program, destroying its missile arsenal, weakening its navy, and even bringing down the regime in Tehran. Months later, none of these goals had been achieved. Moreover, the war weakened US President Donald Trump. So does he still have a chance to reach an agreement?

Trump himself has no doubts about this. When reports emerged that Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu had ignored warnings from Washington, the US president strongly denied it. “If I tell him to do something, he will do it,” Trump said of Netanyahu, as quoted by the BBC. – We are one step away from signing a very strong agreement, a really good agreement – assured the US president.

“Iran wants nothing more than talks that will break its isolation”

Prof. Thomas Jaeger, an expert on American politics, still sees some chances of reaching an agreement. However, he emphasizes that it all depends on “what we mean by that.” In his opinion Trump could try to sell the declaration of intent itself as a great success. — Trump needs a document and a few commitments to be able to announce a victorious end to the war, Jaeger said in an interview with Bild.

So the answer is yes, Trump still has a chance to reach an agreement. But not for the great peace he promised. At most, an agreement that will freeze the conflict for now. The problem is that many of the key contentious issues would simply be postponed. — Iran wants nothing more than talks that will break its isolation, notes Jaeger.

An expert's sober summary: Ultimately, the world may end up in almost exactly the same place it was before the war – “the difference is that Iran will now be able to make threats closing the Strait of Hormuz.

And Trump? He could still declare himself an architect of peace. His agreement would then be primarily one thing: a political success on paper.
