The Latvian National Armed Forces reported that French fighter jets participating in the North Atlantic Alliance mission patrolling the Baltic airspace shot down a “foreign drone”, probably Ukrainian. The drone entered the country's airspace due to Russian electronic jamming.
This may be the Kremlin's goal
Additionally, Russian electronic warfare (EW) previously caused a Ukrainian ground-based drone to enter Romanian territorial waters on June 5. The Kremlin used this incident to spread false information, according to which Ukraine is the aggressor in the war started by Russia, thus trying to avoid responsibility.

“The Kremlin will likely continue to use such incidents near or even within NATO borders to absolve Russia of responsibility for possible accidental Russian drone strikes or a false flag attack on Romania or the Baltic states in the future.” – emphasize ISW analysts. The same analysis published on June 8 also indicated that the Kremlin still rejects peace negotiations with Ukraine, despite Ukraine's recent, repeated proposals for direct talks.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz issued a joint statement with President Volodymyr Zelensky on June 7, proposing conditions for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, including an immediate ceasefire, resumption of negotiations and freezing the current front line as a starting point for talks.
Peace talks still at an impasse
In an interview with Sky News on June 7, President Zelensky confirmed that he recently met in Kiev with Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich, who acted as an intermediary for Russian President Vladimir Putin, to tell him that Ukraine is ready to freeze the front line along the current line of contact and resume peace negotiations, including through direct talks with Putin.
On June 4, after meeting with Abramovich, Zelensky also published an open letter addressed to Putin, in which he proposed talks with him at the leadership level. However, Putin rejected Zelensky's proposal for direct negotiations.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on June 8 reaffirmed the Kremlin's commitment to honoring the “agreements” that the United States and Russia allegedly reached at the Alaska summit in August 2025, taking advantage of the lack of public information about the alleged agreements to falsely portray Russia as a negotiator ready for talks.
Chairman of the Defense Committee of the State Duma of Russia Andrei Kartapolov and member of the State Duma Defense Committee Viktor Sobolev rejected the joint Ukrainian-European statement of June 8, stating that the proposals are “unacceptable” to Russia and that Russia can only achieve its war goals by “reaching the western borders of Ukraine.”
