The island in the Baltic Sea has been sold. “Scary Lost Place”

The tender held on June 4 was won by the Austrian company McCube. It specializes in modular prefabricated houses. A former East German degaussing station, located southeast of Rügen, is up for auction. The island lies 3 km east of the Vilm nature reserve in the Greifswalder Bodden.

This is what makes this island in the Baltic Sea so special

The platform is considered one of the most unusual real estate offers in Germany. A scary, lost place in the middle of the Baltic Sea: a ruined house and technical installations. According to the property description, it is a platform built of concrete frames, covered with sheet metal and wooden boards, standing on 600 piles. An area of 250 square meters protrudes from the lagoon.

Oliver Pesendorfer, the head of McCube, imagines using the artificial island as a place for cultural and events events. Weddings would also be possible there. An attempt to transform the station into a recreation center failed about 10 years ago.

Despite its deplorable condition, the property attracted considerable interest even before the auction. “We were calling every day from all over Germany to dozens, maybe even several hundred, interested people,” says Kai Rocholl, member of the management board of Norddeutsche Grundstücksauktionen AG.

This is what the buyer of the island says

Pesendorfer single-handedly won the island at auction. But even before the auction, he had already found a business partner. Pesendorfer told Bild: “We can find synergies in the way we use the island,” he said.

The facility was built in 1954 for the National People's Army (NVA) of the GDR. Entry was forbidden. Only a few sailors were stationed there. Marines neutralized ships' magnetic fields. The counterfield was generated at the station using cables laid under water. This was to protect ships from mines and torpedoes.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the demagnetization station in Lauterbach was no longer needed. The facility fell into ruin.
