Hagi posted a photo on Facebook today from his retirement match, the “Hagi Gala” (60,000 people came to say goodbye to him on April 24, 2001), along with the message: “Happy birthday, Romania! Always a pride to represent you!“.

The “king” of Romanian football represented Romania for the last time as a national team, in 2001, in the match lost with Slovenia.

The former captain of the Romanian national team, Gheorghe Popescu (58 years old), also sent a message on National Day.

I dreamed of playing for you and I was the happiest when I fulfilled my dream. Thank you for every emotion experienced under the tricolor. Let's take care of our home, love it more, defend it and always remember that nowhere is like home. Happy birthday, my Romania!“, Hagi's brother-in-law wrote on his social media account owned on Facebook.

Gheorghe Popescu played 115 times for the Romanian national team. He accompanied the message with a photo from the last match played by the Golden Generation, in May 2024.
