5 years after suffering a heart attack on the pitch, Eriksen suffered heart problems again during a national team match. In the 65th minute of the friendly with Ukraine, he put his hand to his heart, then fell on the grass.
The medical team intervened immediately, took the midfielder to the ambulance, and the match was stopped for good. A few minutes later, the Danish FA reported that Eriksen was out of danger, with the player conscious when he left the pitch.
Nicklas Bendtner: “It's the second time it's happened”
Nicklas Bendtner, a former striker at Arsenal and Juventus, close to Eriksen, commented live on the dramatic moment. After retirement, he became a TV pundit in Denmark.
“The most important thing is that he can get out on his feet. Because then it looks like it's okay, given the circumstances. But these are terrible images and completely overshadow the rest of the evening.
My thoughts are with the family and children, it's a difficult situation they are in right now. This is the second time this has happened and as Christian's friend… It's really terrible“, said Bendtner, according to TV2.
It feels good right now. It is on its way to OUH (Odense University Hospital), if it hasn't already arrived. He feels fine and walked off the field alone. And this is a very good sign. His pacemaker is now to be analyzed as it may indicate the underlying problem. He regained consciousness fairly quickly. I think the device did the job it was implanted to do – to make him recover.
Morten Boesen, the Danish national team doctor
The most important thing is that Christian is okay – and that his family is okay. We went to the locker room and had a little chat there. Now we are here and we have a chance to talk about things with each other It's strange to say that this brings back memories.
The most important aspect is that there is a good reaction and that the situation is under control from the doctors. And that the players show respect and the spectators show great respect. It ended as well as it could have – given what happened. We are all deeply grateful for that.
I can only say how things were seen through my eyes. It's a car, and I walk quietly to the edge. Then I turn around and see that Christian is about to fall to the ground. We know what that means, and the reaction is extremely quick and respectful. I can only praise those who handled the situation and the fact that Christian himself left the field on his own two feet.
