“At least 25,000 Americans would have died if I had allowed this submarine to come ashore,” US President Donald Trump claimed in a message published on his network, Truth Social, where he also posted declassified images of the action to destroy the submarine, according to ABC News.

The attack by the US military on the submarine took place on Thursday in the Caribbean Sea, but images of the destruction of the submarine were released this weekend by the leader of the White House.

“I had the great honor of destroying a very large drug-carrying submarine headed for the United States on a well-known transit route for narcotics trafficking. The US Secret Service confirmed that this vessel was loaded primarily with fentanyl and other illegal narcotics,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

The US president said there were four known narco-terrorists on board the ship. Two of them were killed and two survived. The survivors will be returned to their home countries of Ecuador and Colombia to face arrest and trial.

“Under my command, the United States of America will not tolerate the trafficking of illegal drugs by narco-terrorists, by land or sea,” Donald Trump said.

In images published by the American leader, a submarine can be seen moving just under the surface of the water, and at one point it is hit from the air, which causes two consecutive explosions.

Thursday's attack was the sixth military strike in the Caribbean against suspected drug traffickers. Trump claims he has the legal authority to use lethal military force against drug cartels because they fall into the same category as terrorist organizations that pose an imminent threat to the United States.
