A fifth-year resident doctor was found dead, Saturday afternoon, in a toilet of the Floreasca Emergency Clinical Hospital in Bucharest. Colleagues tried to revive him, but without success. The doctor had been on duty since the morning, and the alarm was raised after his colleagues noticed that he was no longer responding, notes Observatornews.ro.
The medical personnel immediately started resuscitation maneuvers, but they did not work. Sources close to the investigation point to a possible cause of death as a self-injected overdose, but the exact circumstances are to be determined by investigators and medical examiners.
According to his colleagues, the doctor was professionally appreciated and had not previously raised questions about his behavior. He had two small children, both under the age of three.
The investigation is ongoing, and the police are to establish all the circumstances in which the tragedy occurred.
A new tragedy that shakes the medical system
The death of the young resident brings back into focus the enormous pressure to which Romanian doctors are subjected. In recent years, numerous cases of medical personnel dying during or immediately after the guards have caused debates about working conditions in hospitals.
The most famous recent case is that of Dr. Ștefania Szabo, surgeon and medical director of the Buzău County Hospital, found lifeless in the guard room in October 2025, after a prolonged work shift.
According to data compiled by entrepreneur and medical device specialist Adrian Istudor, dozens of doctors have lost their lives while on duty or immediately after the end of their shifts in the last two decades.
Representatives of the medical system point out that legislation on rest time is often difficult to apply in hospitals due to staff shortages, and the extended work schedule can have serious consequences on the health of doctors.
Discussions about drug testing of medical personnel
The Floreasca case also appears against the background of increasingly intense debates regarding drug use in public institutions.
Recently, the Minister of the Interior, Cătălin Predoiu, admitted that the phenomenon of the consumption of prohibited substances exists even in certain state institutions. In this context, anti-drug expert Cătălin Țone declared that the possibility of introducing periodic testing for employees in public order structures, but also for medical personnel, is being analyzed.
According to him, the discussions are aimed at the implementation of verification mechanisms that will contribute to the identification and prevention of drug use in professions with high responsibility.
Meanwhile, the investigation regarding the death of the resident doctor from Floreasca continues, and the official conclusions regarding the cause of death will be established after the completion of the medical-legal expertise.
