Folk calendar
Free tree
In Rus' the wild rose was called the tree of freedom. From this day, as people believed, real summer began. That’s what they said: “The rose hips are blooming—the blush of the year leads.”
In Rus', rose hips were a symbol of youth, beauty and love. There was a legend about his origin: a beautiful young Cossack woman fell in love with a guy, but the village chieftain was seduced by her beauty, kidnapped the girl, and sent her fiance to war. The captive managed to escape into the forest; there she took her own life, and a bush with soft pink fragrant flowers grew on her grave. One day the chieftain saw this bush and decided to break off a branch with beautiful flowers, but it immediately became covered with sharp thorns and skinned the enemy’s hand in blood.
It was common among people to come to the rosehip bush to get rid of sadness and calm the soul. And when the rose hips were just blooming, the grandmothers sat down under them with their grandchildren and told them fairy tales. It was believed that this would help children get rid of their fears. The healing properties of rose hips were also valued.
On these days, the so-called summer, or green, Christmastide began. It was customary to decorate houses with vegetation and curl wreaths on birch trees. We observed signs: if it rains at this time, there will be a lot of mushrooms.
