Folk calendar

Nikiforov day

Nikephoros, Patriarch of Constantinople, whose memory is honored on this day, lived in the 8th-9th centuries. He is venerated in the person of the saint. Nikephoros was a zealous defender of icons, so after the accession of the iconoclast Emperor Leo the Armenian to the throne, he was exiled to a monastery on the shores of the Bosphorus, where he died. When the relics of the patriarch were found, they turned out to be incorrupt.

People said that the sun was melting the snow more and more, and spring waters seeped into the den and disturbed the bear. On this day, the owner of the forest woke up and left his winter home. In Rus', the bear was considered a person, only in a different form; No wonder there are many legends about the transformation of a bear into a human – and vice versa. Some parts of the bear's body were used in rituals: for example, they used their paws to tell fortunes.

Geese were expected on Nikifor: if they flew on this day, it foreshadowed a fruitful year. And if the geese began to “rinse” in the water, it means that warm weather is just around the corner. The arrival of the lark, the first of the spring birds, also spoke of warm days; but if the finch arrived first, it promised cold weather. Fogs on this day predicted a rainy summer.

We went fishing that day. They said that roach, perch and ide bite well on the last ice.
