British footballer David Beckham posted a photo on Instagram on June 3, one of which showed him with ex-Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova.
He noted that he visited one of the most prestigious Grand Slam tennis tournaments in the world – the French Open, which is held annually in Paris on clay courts.
“Beautiful day in Paris. My first Roland Garros. Always great to spend time with someone,” he wrote.
Sharapova posted a video on her Instagram showing her and Beckham exchanging kisses when they met.
How Beckham supported Ukraine
Beckham came out in support of Ukraine after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the aggressor country of the Russian Federation. In particular, in March 2022, for a week he handed over his Instagram page to a pediatrician from Kharkov, who showed his multi-million audience the work of the perinatal center she headed under the shelling of the occupiers.
In the summer of the same year, he took part in the second summit of first ladies and gentlemen via video link, which took place in Kyiv on the initiative of the first lady of Ukraine Elena Zelenskaya, entitled “Ukraine and the world: the future that we will build together.”
“Since the beginning of the war, I have been closely monitoring the situation in Ukraine. I have been in contact with UNICEF. I cannot even imagine what the Ukrainians have gone through in these five months. But I understand that it is important to restore their normal lives,” Beckham said.
He stressed that Ukrainian children must be protected and remain safe.
What Sharapova said about the war
Former Russian tennis player Sharapova published a post on Instagram in March 2022 with a photo of a child who was forced to leave home due to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the aggressor country Russia. She said she was “heartbroken” by the stories of families and children affected by the “escalating crisis in Ukraine.” At the same time, Sharapova did not mention Russia as an aggressor country and did not condemn its actions.
