Ukraine orders the evacuation of thousands of civilians from the Kharkiv region. Fears of a Russian advance

Ukrainian authorities on Tuesday ordered the evacuation of more than 7,000 civilians from several localities in the Kharkiv region, located in the northeastern part of the country, on the border with Russia, a sign of concerns about an advance of Russian troops, reports AFP.

“Given the security situation and the systematic attacks of the enemy, we are expanding the mandatory evacuation zone,” regional governor Oleh Syniehubov said on Telegram.

This measure applies to seven localities and affects more than 7,000 people, including more than 1,700 children, he said.

Ukrainian authorities regularly order evacuations of civilians in the east of the country, where most of the fighting has been concentrated for more than four years, but less often in other areas.

The Russian army controls strips of territory of several tens of square kilometers on the border, in the Kharkiv region and in the neighboring Sumy region, but its military effort is concentrated in other regions.
