The Tarom company announced that the first Boeing 737 MAX aircraft that will enter the fleet modernization process will bear the name of Mircea Lucescu, one of the most titled and respected technicians in the history of European football.
The decision comes after the conclusion of a protocol for the use of the name, signed by the representatives of the Lucescu family, Neli Lucescu and Răzvan Lucescu, together with the general director of Tarom, Bogdan Costaș. The Lucescu family granted the right to use the name free of charge, a gesture interpreted by the company as a sign of support for the values promoted by the project.
The Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, considered the most performing in the Tarom fleet, will thus honor a remarkable sporting career: national titles won in Romania, Turkey and Ukraine, as well as historic performances in European cups, including reaching the semifinals with a Romanian team.
“A tribute that our family receives”
“My father dedicated his whole life to Romanian and European football. The fact that his name will be carried by an aircraft is a tribute that our family receives with emotion and gratitude. We hope that this aircraft will always travel well and be a symbol of performance”declared Răzvan Lucescu.
The company representatives explained that the choice of Mircea Lucescu for this aircraft represents both a tribute to Romanian sport and an expression of the company's values: work, discipline and perseverance.
In this context, the general director highlighted that the initiative continues the tradition started in 2024, when a Boeing 737-800 aircraft received the name of the gymnast Nadia Comăneci.
The aircraft enters service from this summer
The new Boeing 737 MAX “Mircea Lucescu” will join the fleet starting this summer and will operate flights to major European capitals, being presented by the company as a symbol of performance and confidence in Romanian aviation.
“We want every flight with this aircraft to remind passengers that Tarom, like Romania's great athletes, has the ability to overcome any obstacles to exceed expectations and make Romanians proud,” the company's management also stated.
