Dispute over “UPA Heroes”. The Ukrainian minister explains and appeals to Poles

“The aggravation of relations between Ukraine and Poland brings benefits neither to Ukrainians nor to Poles.” – wrote Sybiha on social media.

At the end of May, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky decided to name one of the units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces after “UPA Heroes”. The Ukrainian Insurgent Army concerned by this decision is responsible for mass crimes against the Polish population in Volhynia. The Polish authorities reacted decisively. President Karol Nawrocki stated that at the next meeting of the Chapter of the Order of the White Eagle he would want to take away this decoration from Zełenski.

On Wednesday morning, a statement on this matter was published by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Andriy Sybiha. He recalled that over the last two years, our two countries have been conducting a constructive dialogue on controversial historical issues, exhumations have been unblocked and the victims have been reburied.

“And this is the right approach, based on mutual respect, recognition and honesty. It must not be undermined or create a spiral of hatred. Especially in a situation when all of us – Ukrainians, Poles and other Europeans – are once again threatened by our eternal enemy, Russia,” said the minister.

Sybiha does not write directly that this decision was made by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky.

Ukrainian soldiers wanted to name the unit in honor of the “UPA Heroes”

The name of the subunit was the choice of our soldiers. Our defenders deserve unconditional respect. It is they who today, at the expense of their health and often their lives, maintain the front line and defend all of Europe against the Russian threat. They pay the highest price for it. I know for sure that our soldiers did not have even the slightest anti-Polish intentions. They wanted to commemorate those who many years ago also fought against imperial Moscow, Bolshevik-communist occupation and repression,” explains the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

Andriy Sybiha emphasized that Ukrainians are grateful “for Poland's leadership role in supporting Ukraine in this terrible time of war”. “We want to talk about all issues, including the most difficult ones, in the spirit of mutual understanding and openness. I call for dialogue and strengthening relations in line with the security priorities and the successful future of our countries.” – he appealed.
